Privacy Policy
Our practice-test app for learner drivers in New Zealand — published as “NZ DT Driving Test Theory 2026” on the Apple App Store and “NZ Learner Licence Test” on Google Play (the “app”).
Last updated 14 September 2026
In short: the app does not track you. There are no accounts and no ads, and we never use Apple’s advertising identifier or share your data with advertisers or data brokers. To keep your progress safe, the app stores a device identifier, the name you enter, your test results and your subscription status in our database, and we use analytics and crash reports to improve the app.
1. About this policy
Movil Softwares Inc. (“we”, “us”) built and publishes our practice-test app for learner drivers in New Zealand — published as “NZ DT Driving Test Theory 2026” on the Apple App Store and “NZ Learner Licence Test” on Google Play (the “app”). This policy explains what personal information the app collects, why, who else sees it, and what you can do about it.
It covers the app and any later version of it released under a different name for the same jurisdiction. It does not cover the App Store, Google Play, or any website we link to; those are run by other organisations under their own privacy policies.
We handle your information in accordance with New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles.
We are not affiliated with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency or with any government body. The app is an independent study aid. It is not an official test, and passing it does not guarantee anything about the real one.
2. The short version
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I need an account? | No. There is no sign-up, no login and no password. |
| Do you track me? | No. We do not link data from the app with other companies’ data for advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers. The app never asks for tracking permission and does not use Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA). |
| Do you know my name? | Only the name you type in. The app asks for a first name, and an optional last name, to greet you with. It is saved on your device and in the record for your device in our database. It is not used for analytics or advertising. |
| Are there ads? | No. The app contains no advertising and no advertising SDKs. |
| Do you sell my data? | No. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone, for any purpose. |
| Do you track my location? | No. The app never requests location access. |
| What leaves my device? | A device identifier, the name you entered, the jurisdiction you selected, your test progress and scores, your subscription status, app usage events, approximate location worked out from your IP address, and crash reports. Section 3 lists it in full. |
| Can I get it deleted? | Yes — email us and we will delete the record for your device. |
3. What we collect
This section lists the information the app collects, where it goes and why. None of it is used to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Information that stays on your device
The app remembers your answers to the short set-up questions, the jurisdiction and vehicle type you chose, your language, your reminder setting and a local copy of your progress. This is kept in the app’s own storage on your device and is erased when you uninstall the app.
Information the app sends to our database
So that your progress is not lost, the app creates a record for your device in our database, which is hosted on Google Cloud Firestore. That record contains:
- a device identifier — on Android the Android ID, on iOS the “identifier for vendor”. Both are generated by your operating system and are specific to your device. They are not your name, phone number or email address, and they do not identify you personally to us;
- the jurisdiction you selected;
- your practice-test progress — which tests you have taken, your score on each, whether you passed, how many attempts you made, and when;
- the first name, and last name if you gave one, that you entered so the app can greet you;
- your subscription status — whether you hold a premium plan, and whether a purchase was started or completed (never your payment details);
- whether you have finished the introductory screens, and the app version you are using;
- timestamps for when the record was created and last changed.
This is what lets you close the app, come back later or reinstall it, and still find your progress.
Usage and diagnostic information
We use three analytics and crash-reporting services — Google Firebase Analytics, Google Firebase Crashlytics and Mixpanel — to understand how the app is used and to find out when it breaks. They collect:
- events such as the app being opened, a session starting, a screen being viewed, a test being started or finished, and taps on the subscription screens — keyed to the same device identifier described above;
- properties we set, such as your country, jurisdiction, vehicle type and whether you have a subscription;
- purchase events — which plan was bought, its price and currency, and the store’s transaction reference;
- standard technical information collected automatically by these tools, such as device model, operating system version, app version, language and the time of the event;
- your approximate location (country, region or city), which the analytics providers work out from the IP address of your internet connection. The app never asks for location permission and never receives your precise location;
- if the app crashes: a crash report with the technical state of the app at the time. Crash reports are not linked to your device record.
We use this to understand how people actually study — which lessons get used, where people give up, which tests are too hard — and to decide what to build and fix next.
We use analytics only to improve the app. We do not use it for advertising, we do not combine it with data from other companies, and we do not share it with data brokers.
On iOS, the app never asks for tracking permission, so Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA) is not available to it. On Android, the Google Analytics library may read the advertising ID your device provides as part of its standard usage measurement; we do not use it to show you advertising, to build an advertising profile, or to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
No tracking and no advertising
The app does not track you. On the App Store, “tracking” means linking data collected in an app with data collected by other companies for targeted advertising or advertising measurement, or sharing it with data brokers. We do neither. The app shows no advertising and contains no advertising SDKs.
If that ever changed, we would update this policy and the app’s App Store and Google Play privacy disclosures first, and on iOS we would ask your permission through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt before any tracking took place. You could refuse, and the app would work the same.
Purchases
If you buy a subscription or a one-off unlock, the purchase is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see or receive your card number, billing address or payment details. The app receives a confirmation that a purchase is valid, and records which tier you hold so it can unlock the right content.
4. What we never collect
These are commitments, not descriptions:
- No tracking. We do not link your data with other companies’ data for advertising, we do not share it with data brokers, and on iOS the app does not use the advertising identifier.
- No precise location. The app does not ask for location permission. Were a future version ever to need it, your device would ask you first and you could refuse.
- No contacts, photos, camera, microphone, calendar, files or health data.
- No payment card details. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple and Google; your card number never reaches us.
- No sale or rental of your personal information, to anyone, for any purpose — including if we introduce advertising.
- No special category data — nothing about your health, beliefs, ethnicity or anything similar.
- No email address or phone number, unless you choose to write to us.
- Nothing knowingly collected from a child under 13.
On Android the app currently requests a single permission: internet access.
5. Why we use it
- To run the app — to show you the right content for your jurisdiction and vehicle, and to save and restore your progress.
- To deliver what you paid for — to unlock premium content and let you restore a purchase on a new device.
- To fix problems — crash reports tell us what broke and on which devices.
- To improve the app — knowing which lessons and tests are actually used tells us what to write more of, and where people get stuck.
- To understand how people study — usage patterns in aggregate, so we can judge whether a change helped or hurt.
- To meet our legal obligations — for example, keeping records we are required to keep.
We do not use your information to make any automated decision that has a legal or similarly significant effect on you.
6. Who we share it with
We do not sell personal information. We use a small number of service providers who process information on our instructions. The list below is current as at the date of this policy; if we add a provider in a category already described here, we will update this table.
| Provider | What it does for us | Their privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase — Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics) | Stores your progress record; app usage measurement; crash reporting | firebase.google.com/support/privacy |
| Mixpanel | Product analytics — which features are used | mixpanel.com/legal/privacy-policy |
| Apple | App distribution and purchase processing on iOS | apple.com/legal/privacy |
| Google Play | App distribution and purchase processing on Android | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Advertisers, advertising networks and data brokers | None. We do not share your information with any of them. | — |
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to — for example in response to a valid court order — or to establish or defend a legal claim, or to protect the safety of a person. If our business is sold or reorganised, information may transfer with it; the buyer would remain bound by this policy until you are told otherwise.
7. Where it is processed
We are a Canadian company, so your information is handled outside New Zealand from the moment you use the app. Our analytics and database providers also process information in the United States and other countries. As Information Privacy Principle 12 requires, we only disclose personal information overseas to recipients who are subject to comparable safeguards.
8. Your rights
Under New Zealand privacy law you have the following rights. To use any of them, email us at app@movilsoftwares.com.
- Access
- Ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you (Information Privacy Principle 6).
- Correction
- Ask us to correct information that is wrong (Information Privacy Principle 7).
- Deletion
- Ask us to delete the record associated with your device.
- Withdraw consent
- Withdraw your consent at any time. Some features stop working if you do — for example, your progress will no longer sync.
- Complain
- Raise a concern with us first. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
We will respond within the time your law allows — and in any case as quickly as we reasonably can. We do not charge for this.
One practical note: because the app has no accounts, your record is keyed to a device identifier rather than to your name or email. To find and delete the right record we may need to ask you for information about your device. We will ask for as little as possible.
If you are not happy with how we have handled your information, you can contact:
- the Office of the Privacy Commissioner — www.privacy.org.nz · 0800 803 909
9. Your choices and controls
- Advertising identifier — on iOS the app never asks for tracking permission and does not use the advertising identifier. On Android, you can delete or reset your advertising ID in Settings → Privacy → Ads.
- Change your name — edit it in the app’s Settings and the record in our database is updated too. To have it removed entirely, email us.
- Turn off reminders — study reminders are local notifications; switch them off in your device's notification settings for the app.
- Clear on-device data — uninstalling the app removes your name, settings and local progress from your device.
- Delete your server-side record — uninstalling does not delete the progress record on our servers, because it is what lets you restore progress after reinstalling. Email us and we will delete it.
- Manage a subscription — subscriptions are managed in your App Store or Google Play account settings, not in the app.
10. How long we keep it
- On-device data — until you uninstall the app or clear its data.
- Your progress record — while the app is in use, and for up to 24 months after the last activity from your device, after which it is deleted. We delete it sooner if you ask.
- Analytics events — for the retention period set in each provider's tools, which we keep to 14 months or less.
- Crash reports — up to 90 days.
- Emails you send us — for as long as we need them to deal with your query, and then for a reasonable period as a record.
11. How we protect it
Information travels between the app and our providers over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), and is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure, which is encrypted at rest. Access to our database is limited to the people who need it to run the service, and is protected by two-factor authentication.
No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot promise absolute security. What we can promise is that we collect as little as we can get away with — the less we hold, the less there is to lose.
If a privacy breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as the Privacy Act 2020 requires.
12. Children
The app is a study aid for learner drivers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app and given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
If you are under 16, please use the app with a parent or guardian's involvement, and ask them before you make a purchase.
13. Changes to this policy
When what the app collects changes, we update this page. We also make a firmer commitment: if we start collecting a category of information for a purpose this policy does not already cover, or we begin showing advertising, we will update this page and tell you in the app before the change reaches you — not afterwards. Where the law requires your consent for the new use, we will ask for it first.
Every change is dated at the top of this page. Older versions are available on request.
